Privately owned multiple listing services are owned and operated by private, for-profit companies or investors rather than by member-owned Realtor associations or brokerages.
Governance, access and policies are set by the private owners and typically reflect commercial priorities — including membership eligibility, fee schedules and board representation — rather than member-driven association governance. A small number of MLSs in the US are privately owned and private purchases of formerly association-owned MLSs illustrate this ownership path.
